As promised, today I’m going to tell you how to set up your home office and avoid disorder.
When we set up a home office we have to take into account few key points:
1. Color. Your room color is an important thing. After all, you are going to stay in this room at least 30 hours weekly. Choose a color you like, but let me suggest take a quick look at chromotherapy.
2. Minimalism. Store only the things you need for work. Files, computer, printer, CDs, specialized books, etcetera. This point is important specially if your home office is small.
3. Furniture. Once we have chosen the color and it’s clear for us, what things and how many we are going to use and store into our home office is the moment of furniture choosing. Choose a color that plays well with the room color. If your space is not too big , choose light furniture.
4. Order. Keep your workplace in order. This is the most difficult thing but it is the most important, too. Everybody has the temptation to load her desk with papers, computers, screens, more papers, some magazines, a book, more papers … If you take a look in flickr.com, you could see some great examples of this. First, a home office is not just a desk, for somebody could be but not for most people. Second, if we have our desk full of junk, how are we going to do some productive work?. Third, a desk full of things make us psychologically overwhelmed, and you already know what’s going on when one feel himself overwhelmed: Zero Productivity.
A desk with drawers, a chair, a bookshelf, a file cabinet, and some boxes, makes the minimum set for maintaining our workplace in order.
Ikea has some great ideas and furniture solutions for home offices. In fact my home office is 90% furnished by Ikea.
5. Personal. Your home office is your place, it’s not a cubicle on intel nor apple. Put photos, pictures, flowers and all the things that you like and make you happy.
The key points for a home office that we are going to enjoy are: order, light and relaxing.
